Decisions Decisions (FEEDBACK PLEASE)

So, Me(lissa) and Me were discussing whether or not one or both of us will walk for graduation (in August). We are undecided so we are hoping for input from family and friends (aka the readers of this blog).
Pros:
An event we can invite a lot of people to and take pictures and have memories.
Cons:
We may have to come back to Utah early which would be a big problem if I am not done with my internship that soon.
There is the cost of renting a gown and such.

So that's our list
Melissa wants to walk a semester before she graduates so she can walk with me. This might be tricky. We were thinking we could just throw a graduation party for our friends and family at our own convenience and perhaps that would be just as good as an actual graduation ceremony.

Comments?
As I see it a big part of the graduation is for friends and family, so don't just tell us to do what we think is best, tell us what y'all prefer.
Thanks!

  1. Walking together is freaking awesome. I would highly recommend it. It was one of the most special days of my life. Being able to say "Look, we did this, and we did it together!" is priceless. It's easy to make it happen if that's what you want--you just show up the day of the ceremony and write your name on the card they give you. For me they even announced, "Graduating with her husband, Cathryn Matheson, with a B.A. in English Teaching from the College of Humanities." So cool to hear that over the huge speakers in the Marriott Center. :)

If you do want to walk together, keep in mind that one of you will miss your own college's ceremony (for example, when Scott and I walked together, I missed the College of Humanities graduation and walked at his--the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences graduation). If it matters to you to walk with your professors & classmates or to "graduate" from your subject matter, then you can't walk together--you have to pick one. (Oh, and keep in mind that Ryan's college, same as Scott's, has the longest ceremony because they're the biggest college on campus. Something like 1100 people graduated the same ceremony we did. Takes a couple of hours to read everyone's names.)

For the record, if you do have the option of walking to get your diploma, I would highly recommend it. It feels really special--and it's a nice way to say, "Hooray! I'm freaking done with school!" (at least for now...haha). It was a really awesome experience for me, walking across that stage and shaking an apostle's hand and picking up that heavy diploma. College is hard, and graduation was a cool way to top it off and really tell yourself you've made it through.

I think it is very possible to walk a semester early. A handful of people did it at our (April) graduation, and I think they have even more people do it in August because there's no December ceremony.

Good luck with whatever you decide! Don't worry too much about the robe costs--it's something like $38, which is way worth it to be able to have pictures of your college graduation in real graduation clothes for the rest of your life, you know? And you get to keep the robes anyway...so free costume for years later. :)

  2. Um...do you think it loses some of the effect of the fabulous-ness of graduation if you aren't actually done with your bachelors?
